Though I'll be back in Havana for an overnight stay in July (via cruise), my next stay in Cuba will be far from Havana. The island is HUGE and I'd like to explore the other, less popular destinations such as Holguin, Santiago de Cuba or Camaguey. Needless to say, as I was watching Celia on Netflix, her father was threatening to send her away from Havana, to Holguin. This peaked my interest; how far is Holguin from Havana? It's got to be pretty far because poor Celia began crying her eyes out.
Holguin is about 9 hours driving distance from Havana and is a city in eastern Cuba. It is the third most populous province after Havana and Santiago de Cuba. Holguin has it's own airport (HOG) and Guardalavaca is a town within the province. Known to Europeans as a tourist destination for its white sandy beaches and warm waters.
If you're looking to escape, reflect, and plan your next move in life, Guardalavaca might be the place for you. However, if you're looking to get out and explore you can do that too. There are tours that will take you through the mountains and visit with native families. There's also a Cuban cigar factory. And you can't forget the beaches.
When I do go to Holguin I plan to stay at this Airbnb in Guardalavaca (about an hour from the HOG airport). Currently $16 per night in May, Litzandro, the host, is an Airbnb superhost and has received numerous compliments and great ratings (also provides homecooked meals). "Liso" also speaks English and is ready to chat with visitors about Cuba's history.
I deeply and sincerely LOVE Cuba. I've read books and watched documentaries on what has been such an elusive destination for many years. The fact that I was able to visit and STILL able to visit is something I can never take for granted.
This is not ad - I don't know Litzandro or work with Airbnb. This is just me sharing my own research and plans! Feel free to use them as you please (and let me know if you go!).
